In my work I am examining the essence of fragility and vulnerability. The skeletal nature of the forms represents the susceptibility of living organisms to environmental forces, be they natural or man-made.
My main materials are porcelain and nichrome wire; the addition of oxides, stains and silicon carbide to the porcelain clay or slip produces stark contrasts in colour and texture. The work is mainly raw glazed and fired to cone 7 in an electric kiln.
The materials used have such disparate qualities, producing a visual as well as physical tension. Subjecting the work to the elemental firing process causes a partial fragmentation and apparent fragility of the pieces, whilst retaining the essential potency of their forms.
